Happy Summer Solstice!
Find out what children are doing at Yo-Chi in The Summer!
Our lovely yoga teachers are now fully furnished with the new summer curriculum and their lesson plans are all prepped and laid out for them so that rather than fussing over the planning, they can focus on teaching the kids everything they need to know about summer and how it affects our bodies, our minds and our beautiful planet.
For the next three months, you’ll find us with our kids doing sun salutations, spinal twists, energetic flows and heart opening postures in our favoured Yo-chi style of movement. We’ll teach the children yoga flows that work in unison with the earth, as they rise up and stand strong, feeling as fully grown as their little legs can be.
We’ll take them outside to simply stop and look around and notice what summer means to the plants, flowers and the crops in the fields and then, with the help of our special organ characters, they’ll learn what seasonal foods we should be eating around this time. We know at Yo-Chi how hard it can be to encourage children to eat fruit and vegetables so we provide them with their scrummy seasonal recipes to try at home!
Polly Pericardium is one of our favourite organ characters. She’s our ‘Happiness Agent’ in our Yo-Chi programme. Playing her dutiful role of keeping the heart happy and protecting it from any emotional ups and downs. Polly Pericardium really helps the children understand their feelings and that it’s ok to feel sad, anxious, nervous or cross. But how wonderful that we can then teach them how to work through these emotions.
Using role play, storytelling and gathering round for campfire stories , the children can learn to understand their emotions and empathise with others. Meridian stretches will help them balance and un-block their energy. Breathing exercises will calm them and alter their mood. Postures will show them how to become still so they can find quietness and inner peace. How amazing to have been taught these things when we were little at school!
